Strange non-chaotic attractors in quasiperiodically forced circle maps

چکیده
The occurrence of strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) in quasiperiodically forced systems has attracted considerable interest over the last two decades, in particular since it provides a rich class of examples for the possibility of complicated dynamics in the absence of chaos. Their existence was discovered in the early 1980’s, independently by Herman [1] for quasiperiodic SL(2, R)-cocycles and by Grebogi et al [2] for so-called ‘pinched skew products’. However, except for these two particular classes there are still hardly any rigorous results on the topic, despite a large number of numerical studies which all confirmed the widespread existence of SNA in quasiperiodically forced systems. Here, we prove the existence of SNA in quasiperiodically forced circle maps under rather general conditions, which can be stated in terms of C-estimates. As a consequence, we obtain the existence of strange non-chaotic attractors for parameter sets of positive measure in suitable parameter families. Further, we show that the considered systems have minimal dynamics. The results apply in particular to a forced version of the Arnold circle map. For this particular example, we also describe how the first Arnold tongue collapses and looses its regularity due to the presence of strange non-chaotic attractors and a related unbounded mean motion property.

The creation of strange non-chaotic attractors in non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations
We propose a general mechanism by which strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) can be created during the collision of invariant tori in quasiperiodically forced systems, and then describe rigorously how this mechanism is implemented in certain parameter families of quasiperiodically forced interval maps. In these families a stable and an unstable invariant circle undergo a saddle-node bifurcation...
متن کاملStrange Nonchaotic Attractors in the Quasiperiodically forced Logistic Map
Different mechanisms for the creation of strange non-chaotic dynamics in the quasiperiodically forced logistic map are studied. These routes to strange nonchaos are characterised through the behavior of the largest nontrivial Lyapunov exponent, as well as through the characteristic distributions of finite time Lyapunov exponents. Strange nonchaotic attractors can be created at a saddle–node bif...

We show that the classic examples of quasi-periodically forced maps with strange nonchaotic attractors described by Grebogi et al and Herman in the mid-1980s have some chaotic properties. More precisely, we show that these systems exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions, both on the whole phase space and restricted to the attractor. The results also remain valid in more general class...

Numerous studies have shown that strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can be observed generally in quasiperiodically forced systems. These systems could be one- or high-dimensional maps, continuous-time systems, or experimental models. Recently introduced measures of complexity based on recurrence plots can detect the transitions from quasiperiodic to chaotic motion via SNAs in the previously c...
متن کاملFractal properties of robust strange nonchaotic attractors in maps of two or more dimensions.
We consider the existence of robust strange nonchaotic attractors in a simple class of quasiperiodically forced systems. Rigorous results are presented demonstrating that the resulting attractors are strange in the sense that their box-counting dimension D0 is larger than their information dimension D1 by 1 (i.e., D(0)=D(1)+1). We also show how this property is manifested in numerical experiments.
